If you live in Minneapolis or St. Paul, it’s hard to not be aware of locally owned Castle Building & Remodeling. Those purple awnings are difficult to miss, but did you know they have been hosting an unconventional home tour for the past five years that gives the Parade of Homes a run for its money?
Chances are, if you’ve been to other home tours, you’ve thought, “Hmm, these are nice, but I could never afford anything like this! I’d rather see projects that relate to me… I’m here to get ideas for remodeling my house and these houses are just over the top.” Unlike most home tours, the Castle Educational Home Tour doesn’t show off their most elaborate projects. Instead, Castle’s Home Tour is meant to show everyday, down-to-earth remodeling projects that the average homeowner can afford.
Owner and creator of this tour, Loren Schirber, explains, “Because the cost for remodelers to participate in other tours is about $1,000 - $3,000 per home, they tend to only show their largest and fanciest projects. Our goal is to help people understand what a realistic remodel involves and what is achievable within their budget. So, while there is still a lot to ‘Oooooh’ and ‘Ahhhh’ at Castle’s tour, it shows 14 more typical remodeling projects that families are more likely to complete.”
Another reason Castle’s tour is unique is its focus on education of the homeowner. As a company, Castle has declared a commitment to educating homeowners through free education classes throughout the year, a super informative website, etc. Castle bumps it up a notch for the Castle Educational Home Tour. For each home on the tour there is a corresponding topic and a remodeling professional on site, which gives visitors an opportunity for some one-on-one advice.
An incentive to see all projects on tour: the more projects you visit, the more times you are entered to win big! Prizes include a $5,000 remodel, a custom vanity replacement with Cambria countertops, $1,000 gift cards for Field Outdoor Spaces, Warners’ Stellian, and All Inc., and a robot vacuum (just to name a few).
Designer, Ashley Hansen expects ‘H6’ to be the showstopper of the 2018 Castle Educational Home Tour. This project is a whole-house remodel on Summit Avenue in St. Paul and earned a place on the tour guidebook cover for its custom tile mosaic in the master shower. “Besides our lifetime guarantee, our craftsmanship is what Castle is known for,” mentions Hansen.
“Long-time tiler, Nick Jensen, completed this shower mosaic with a ton of enthusiasm. It’s these sorts of projects that our employees yearn for. We love when a project requires us to do something new and custom, rather than typical white subway tile. Luckily, most of the homes we work on are older (built before 1960) so we get a chance to challenge ourselves often.”
The 2018 Summit whole-house remodel is a must-see whether you’re interested in a kitchen, bathroom, mudroom, or laundry room remodel. Castle’s inflatable bouncy house will also be on-site, so they encourage you to bring the kiddos along, too!
Mark your calendars for the weekend of September 29-30th, noon-5PM for the best Castle Educational Home Tour yet and learn something about remodeling!
