We recently sat down with craft artisan premium granola makers (and Twin Cities favorites) Gustola Granola to find the recipe for their sustainable success. Here's what we learned:
Gustola Granola started as a baking experiment gone right, in a busy Minneapolis home kitchen. College years at UW-Madison and time serving as Peace Corps Volunteers in the Dominican Republic and Haiti fostered a love of outdoor markets, and with the Linden Hills Farmers Market blocks from their home, they decided to involve their four kids in a small business and embark on a fun summer adventure.
That 2013 adventure led to readying Gustola for retail store shelves in Minneapolis by June 2014. City Food Studio was home to Gustola’s baking operation for two years. By the summer of 2016, with their fan base ever-expanding, they found production help… making it the same hand-crafted way, with the very same recipe, but with more oven capacity and hands on deck.
Minnesota has supported Gustola from the start and they’ve focused on growing their brand right here. Linden Hills Co-op, The Wedge, and Kowalski’s were the first grocers to take a chance on them. Now they’re honored to be in roughly 200 retail stores throughout Minnesota and neighboring states. They also cherish the opportunity to donate to and partner with many local organizations, working steadfastly to strengthen their community. One of their favorite partnerships is with Wilderness Inquiry, who has packed Gustola out on all of their adventure trips four years running.
“We hope you find Gustola Granola the most delicious granola your taste buds have ever encountered! Like many granolas, we’re non-GMO, wheat-free, protein-rich, and full of whole grains. Where we really shine is our lower sugar (and use of natural maple syrup); unusually robust, homemade taste; and ‘make-you-smile’ packaging! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to start, sustain and end your daily adventures with Gustola Granola. Make it an incredible 2019!” - Angela Gustafson, Founder of Gustola Granola
