Get Hygge! Upcycled Style Strategies for a Cozier Fall

October 11, 2017 Trisha Mead

Cooler weather has us ready to crank up the cozy (while saving energy). These 5 tips will warm up your space and set the perfect mood for gathering with friends. Nordic cultures even have a word for this:

“Hygge- A quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being ”

Doesn't that sound.... like the perfect antidote to the stresses of the week?

Here are some low impact projects that will add a bit more hygge into your life.

1. Calm your Mind... by Clearing the Clutter.

It's impossible to feel calm when you feel crammed or cluttered. Give yourself some room to relax by recycling or donating the things that no longer light up your life.

2.  Replace Glare with Glow.

Candlelight sets a relaxed mood and saves on energy use during the darker days of winter. Here are a few clever ways to create candle holders out of unusual and upcycled materials.

You may need to stop in at a hardware store for a few DIY supplies. Take advantage of one of these offers when you do.

3. Put a Sweater.... on Everything.

Just because a sweater is out of date or stretched beyond repair doesn't mean it can't still keep you cozy. Transform your old sweaters into cozy pillows, quilts, or candle holders for an instant warm up for the whole house.

4. Add Character to a Corner

Invite curiosity and reflection with a vignette of vintage curios and collectibles in an under-used part of the room.

Find display-worthy, out-of-print hardcovers at one of these local booksellers.

Add a few intriguing new-to-you objects from one of our favorite vintage stores.

5. Ready a Warm Welcome

Now that you've cozied up the place, why not invite a few friends over to make the most of the mood?

A warm beverage station stocked with organic teas, fair-trade coffees and other soothing but sustainable beverages will keep the conversation flowing in your cozy new space.

Use the Chinook Book app to save on your favorite blends at one of these local natural grocers.

From all of us at Chinook Book, wishing you a very happy and hygge autumn!
