PDX (9:40pm and 10:00pm)
This Independence Day watch the fireworks show from some of our favorite viewpoints around Portland. We’ve taken this opportunity to provide a quick overview of four stellar locations around the city which will give you fantastic views of the celebration. Skip the hassle of parking with crowds and use the Chinook Book app on you phone to save on transportation for the day! Don't forget to pack yourself some tasty treats!
SW: Pittock Mansion
Hop in a Car2Go (you'll save $30 on registration by clicking here) and zip on up to Pittock Mansion for a fantastic view of the city’s celebration. While Pittock is a little far from the Willamette show, you are able to see every single celebration East of Washington Park, backdropped with Mt. Hood’s majestic angles. This is one of my favorite spots to visit on a clear day because the view is like no other in Portland. On your way up the hill, stop at Zupan's to pick up some gourmet picnic snacks (click here to take $10 OFF of your purchase of $50 or more).
SE: Mt. Tabor
If you are looking for something on the other side of the river, in Southeast Portland, schedule a car with ReachNow and drive over to to Mt. Tabor (click HERE to get a FREE lifetime membership and a $20 driving credit). Parking should be less of a hassle, but with ReachNow, you can park the car anywhere when you're done! A great place to go for an evening stroll, this dormant shield volcano-turned-park has an ideal viewpoint at its peak, complete with a row of benches looking out over the city. While Mt. Tabor is equivalent to Pittock Mansion in its distance from the celebration on the river, there are more viewpoints around the park so you can watch fireworks in different neighborhoods. Don't forget to swing by Ruby Jewel on your way back from the fireworks (click HERE for a FREE handmade ice cream sandwich with purchase of one of equal or greater value).
SE/SW: Eastbank Esplanade/Westbank Waterfront
Want to avoid driving and parking all together? Request a Lyft and head down the the Willamette for an experience that is up close and personal (click HERE to get 50% off four rides). These locations are the closest you can get to the celebration, so keep in mind it will be much louder and brighter than somewhere else in the city. There’s a sense of city pride and camaraderie amongst all the viewers. What better place to celebrate than right in the center of the action? Before the action starts, head over to the Pine Street Market and grab some ice cream at Wiz Bang Bar (get one FREE single soft serve ice cream with purchase of one by clicking HERE).
SW: Council Crest
If you’re looking for a much less crowded option that’s a little more out of the way (without losing the view), grab a ZipCar and head into the West Hills (click HERE to get 50% off of a first year membership, plus FREE driving). While there are many great spots to watch the fireworks from the West Hills, some spots are a little too tight to park and hang out. Despite this, one of my favorite spots in the West Hills is Council Crest, which gives you a fantastic view of the city below.
No matter where you choose to watch the fireworks this year, we wish you a very happy 4th of July! Enjoy!
