This weekend, Central Co-op will open their long-anticipated new location at 4502 N. Pearl Street in Tacoma. Located at the corner of N. Pearl Street and 46th, the new store is convenient to Point Ruston, Pt. Defiance Park, and the Vashon Island Ferry terminal. For forty years, the Co-op has been a community-initiated and community-grown connector of local eaters and producers in Seattle and their location on N. Pearl Street is set to make similar connections for their members and neighbors in Tacoma!
The new store will feature beautiful fresh produce, sustainable meat and seafood, an in-house deli with scratch-made seasonal dishes, and exciting flavors from many independent Washington producers—all on top of basic groceries for your everyday needs. Favorite local producers that can be found at the new store will include Ice Cream Social, Wild Hare Organic Farm, Mountain Muesli, Peace Love and Raw, Soma Kombucha, and many more. Central Co-op follows strong product guidelines that mean that you will never find artificial colors, artificial flavors, or high fructose corn syrup in the products on their shelves.
What truly sets Central Co-op apart though is that their product selection is a direct expression of the values of the 14,000+ members who own and democratically govern the Co-op. These values also drive the Co-op’s respect for their workers, who receive a progressive wage and benefits package, and who make up half of the elected members of the Board of Trustees. A study by the firm Civic Economics—released in 2019—found that Central Co-op has a truly outsized impact on the local economy: including direct, indirect, and induced economic activity, Central Co-op returned 74% of its revenue to the State of Washington in 2017 (compare to 42% at a comparable chain store). Central Co-op is more than an excellent grocery-store, it is a people-powered engine in the local economy.
Their Grand Opening celebration will kick off on Saturday, June 15 with a ribbon cutting at 10am; festivities for the whole community including face painting, guest pygmy goats, and more in front of the store from 11am to 4pm; and 20% off produce all day long. Central Co-op celebrated their 40th anniversary last year, and was recognized by the City of Seattle for the extraordinary economic benefits that they bring to the community through their wage and benefits package, support for Washington producers, and sponsorships and donations to local non-profits. Central Co-op’s Tacoma partners include Nourish Food Bank, St. Leo’s Food Connection, and the Center for Food Preservation Arts.
