Thousands of Seattleites Voted to Select the Winners
of the 3rd Annual Heart of Seattle Awards for Sustainable Business
And the winners are...
The Seattle sustainable business community gathered on April 4th at Seattle Center to honor a select group of local businesses who are leading their sector in sustainable business products and practice. Finalists were chosen based a rigorous application that used sourcing criteria developed by Chinook Book and the highly regarded B Corp Quick Impact Assessment, with help from a select panel of sustainable business experts.
A public vote sparked fierce competition, and over 1,000 votes were tallied to yield the final winners for each category. Photos from the event can be found here. Check out the winners’ interviews below and find out why they’re Seattleites’ favorite sustainable businesses.

Oddfellows Cafe + Bar
Oddfellows strives to provide an inclusive environment for both their customers and their employees. They hire those who tend to be underemployed, such as artists and musicians, and offer accessible and affordable benefits. Oddfellows prides itself on its sustainable practices—all of their to-go containers are recyclable or compostable, and all their ingredients come from local farms.
Sound Experience is a nonprofit organization focused on public engagement and youth education. Their goal is to connect the local community with the surrounding marine environment, and natural world as a whole. From Seattle’s century-old, historic landmark tall ship, Adventuress, Sound Experience practices sustainability in everything they do.
Central Co-Op is owned by its employees and customers so community is incredibly important to them. They pride themselves on providing a progressive and inclusive work environment, and the best entry-level benefits package of any grocery store in the United States. Central Co-Op focuses on bringing local Washington ingredients to a store near you so you can get the best flavor out of the highest quality food.
Ballard Re-Use strives to keep building materials out of landfills so they can be repurposed for use on projects and creative endeavors. They hope to become a well-known resource in the area for anyone who might need affordable building materials or creative supplies, while avoiding buying new.
Swift Industries promotes sustainable travel with locally made outdoor gear and bike bags that are built to last. They strive to feed all the hopes and passions of their employees by providing them with a job and work environment that they love. Swift Industries’ goal is to provide Seattleites with all the equipment they need to explore Seattle and wherever else they may roam.
Utilizing the bicycle as their tool, Bike Works plants seeds of green living through educational classes, camps, riding activities, and community service bicycle repair and refurbishment programs; and trains at-risk teens in job skills with access to employment that speaks to youths’ passions while promoting carbon-free transportation.
