About 8 Limbs Yoga Centers
8 Limbs Yoga Centers is committed to being a supportive and welcoming place to learn and grow through the mind-body practices of yoga. Their commitment is rooted in the eight limbs of yoga—precepts for living that originated in South Asia. The eight limbs of yoga, in the ancient Indian language Sanskrit, are yama (attitudes toward our environment), niyama (attitudes toward ourselves), asana (physical postures), pranayama (breathing practices), pratyahara (sensory restraint), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation), and samadhi (complete integration).
At 8 Limbs Yoga, you will find Hatha and Flow/Vinyasa Yoga classes that are instructional, insightful, and appropriate to your level of yoga experience. Their experienced and highly trained instructors bring their own expertise and passion to their classes—every teacher is different!
28 Day Commitment
Each February they invite 8 Limbs students, teachers, and staff to go deeper with a month of daily practice. Doing the physical practice all 28 days is not required, nor is practicing all 28 days at 8 Limbs. Practice can include any of the 8 Limbs of yoga; you can practice at home, at the studio, on a mountaintop, it all counts! The emphasis is on the word commitment, not challenge. Their 2019 theme, Roots of Yoga, comes from a commitment to link modern day practices of yoga to their source teachings and teachers—both to show respect and to inspire a deeper understanding of this powerful lineage.
Locally Owned Since 1996
8 Limbs founder Anne Phyfe Palmer opened the first location on Capitol Hill’s Pike/Pine district when the neighborhood was known for a couple of music clubs, coffee shops, and a bar called Linda’s. Wedgwood opened in 1999, followed by West Seattle in 2005. Their newest studio, Phinney Ridge, opened in 2009.
Social Justice Mission
To truly live into their mission, and the first yama, ahimsa (non-harming), 8 Limbs has committed to examine, and work to dismantle, the systems of oppression that shape our world. They aim to relate to yoga as a diverse set of historical and contemporary philosophies and practices marked by inequalities. This includes a commitment to deepen their understanding of the ways in which 8 Limbs has been part of, and benefitted from, local and national approaches to yoga that center white, sex/gender- and hetero- normative, economically advantaged, and able bodies. They are committed to investigating and evolving their practices, both as a business and as a community of teachers and practitioners.
Teacher Training Programs
The 8 Limbs Yoga Centers community of yoga teachers and practitioners is a creative and inspiring environment in which to explore the concepts of yoga instruction and support the unfolding of emerging yoga teachers. Their instructors are committed to personal and professional growth, and to sharing the transformative practice of yoga through their teaching. The 8 Limbs 200-hour Teacher Training courses offer the aspiring or continuing yoga teacher or serious student a sound foundation in the principals of yoga theory and practice, within the supportive container of the training staff and fellow participants, a community that deepens with each day of training.
