Every year, King Conservation District’s (KCD) Native Bareroot Plant Sale empowers hundreds of homeowners, gardeners, and nonprofits to plant over 60,000 native trees, shrubs, and plants in King County. These native plants help retain soil integrity, attract pollinators, provide food and habitat for song birds and beneficial insects, and even help create habitat for our salmon.
Native plants protect and enhance our yards, forests, soil, and water. And why shouldn’t they? Thousands of years of evolution have adapted these species to thrive in our local soil and water conditions. Native plants are hearty and resilient—they require less maintenance than nonnatives, and are better able to fend off encroaching invasives—without sacrificing beauty.
KCD’s Native Bareroot Plant Sale is coming up Saturday, March 16th, 2019 from 10am to 3pm at the Renton Community Center (1715 Maple Valley Hwy, Renton), but you can reserve your plants today! Their stock is limited, and they do sell out, so don’t delay viewing their online catalog. Save 10% on your next order when you use code CHINOOK2019.
KCD has resources online (including info about plants for sale, planting guides, and FAQs about the sale), and experts at-hand, to help you find the right trees, shrubs, and ground cover for your garden, forest, or neighborhood project and ensure your success. The native plants are bareroot and coming out of winter dormancy so they are ready to be planted in your unamended soil during the spring rains. Bareroot plants are incredibly affordable, with bundles of 10 plants averaging $15. Cash, Visa, and Mastercard are accepted (sorry no checks). For the best deals and availability order early at kingcd.org and your plants will be ready for you at the sale. There will be plants available for walk-up orders the day of the sale, but variety and quantity can’t be guaranteed.
Join KCD for the March 16th Native Plant Sale, talk with terrific partners in conservation, get native plants, and celebrate the start of another ambitious planting season.
Want to see native plants in action? Look for KCD’s ‘Better Ground’ display garden at the 2019 Northwest Flower & Garden Festival February 20-24 at the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle. Their garden will highlight natives and cultivars, many of which will be available at the Plant Sale. It will also feature conservation practices that you can readily implement on your property such as a rain garden, hugelkultur mound, and free soil testing for King County residents. KCD will even have a booth set up with technical staff to answer your questions on working with natives and to take orders for the Plant Sale.
