Local roots, global reach. Seattle company Feathered Friends was born here in 1972, after founders Peter and Carol Hickner fell in love with the mountains of the Pacific Northwest and were looking for a way to stay in the area after the infamous Boeing bust. The couple put their design and sewing skills to work making down jackets, sleeping bags, and bedding. Not expecting their company to take off as it did, Peter and Carol gave it the whimsical name of Feathered Friends, in homage to the high quality goose down used to fill their products.
Since its humble beginnings in the Hickner’s home, Feathered Friends has come into its own as a world-class down goods manufacturer. These days, Feathered Friends’ down suits help climbers summit Mt. Everest and their lightweight sleeping bags keep campers warm on the Pacific Crest Trail and beyond. For nights at home, the company’s quilted throws make reading a book on the couch a cozy venture.
From the beginning, Feathered Friends has been committed to the quality, durability, and high performance of its down gear. That's why all of the company’s products are filled with down certified by the Responsible Down Standard, a third-party certification that ensures the down is the highest quality available and is sourced from humanely treated geese.
That top-notch down, along with innovative Pertex fabrics, makes Feathered Friends jackets and sleeping bags unusually warm for how lightweight they are. They earn top reviews from some of the world's most renowned gear experts—and get a lot of love from campers, climbers, and backpackers who are tired of carrying heavy loads and shivering in their tents. For nights spent at home rather than on the trail, Feathered Friends down comforters also score top marks: reviewers from the New York Times site Wirecutter called the Bavarian 700 Down Comforter "a little bit of heaven."
The Feathered Friends commitment to quality goes hand-in-hand with a commitment to community. Even as Seattle has grown and changed, Feathered Friends has continued to manufacture locally. After factories on Capitol Hill, in Downtown, and the heart of South Lake Union, the company opened a new production facility in Seattle's SODO neighborhood in 2015.
The retail store has likewise called some of Seattle’s favorite neighborhoods home. After a 20 plus year run in the iconic Rodgers Tile building, the storefront moved to a new space in South Lake Union this past summer. The new Seattle store features installations by Pacific Northwest artists, a full line-up of outdoor gear from brands that share a passion for quality and workmanship, a twelve foot high nest (yes, a nest!), and the peerless expertise of Feathered Friends staff.
Swing by the new shop at 263 Yale Ave N in Seattle, and stay warm wherever you are!
