As you know, our Heart of Seattle Awards are underway and now that the top finalists of each category have been chosen, it's time for them to tell YOU why they should get this prestigious recognition. All of the groups have some pretty solid cases, so we've selected some of the best quotes from each finalist and they will be viewable and accessible on blog posts for the next two months. After reading the quotes, vote for the business that you think should be chosen for the Heart of Seattle award in each category. Here are the finalists in the locally retail group:
Moon Valley Organics
"They believe in using simple ingredients from their farm, packaged in environmentally friendly containers, free of any artificial ingredients. They are committed to a self sustaining and eco-friendly lifestyle, one that nourishes the physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of family and friends. They donated 5 of their 10 acres to a pollinator garden that will be installed next year to promote the wellbeing and prosperity of pollinators and for the wellbeing of the earth."
"Ventures is a nonprofit that provides coaching, consulting, and financing for microenterprise owners and operates the Ventures Marketplace to help clients get exposure to customers and develop retail experience. Supporting the Ventures Marketplace is also particularly important right now as low-income families and communities are facing unparalleled challenges in terms of affordability, access to basic services, and opportunities for economic mobility including small business ownership. The Ventures Marketplace creates a convenient, affordable way for local residents to help build an inclusive society and economy in Seattle despite all of the challenges facing the city."
Ada's Technical Books & Cafe
"Ada’s Technical Books & Café is where the technical mind finds what it craves, and where a bookstore becomes a community. They believe in never-ending learning, evolving, and collaboration (and hanging out while doing it). So you can find the knowledge you seek, feed curiosity among friends, and always feel in your element. Their beautiful space is not only a great experience to be in but great for the environment with LEED certification."
"[Swanson's Nursery] help[s] their neighbors love growing as much as they do. They built their business on the trust of their customers, believe that sinking your hands into the earth in anticipation for the promise of tomorrow feeds the soul. They aspire to nurture adventurous gardeners and guarantee each plant they sell. They believe the lessons of the garden carry forward into their daily routines – building patience, gratitude, creativity and trust."
The Seattle Audubon Nature Shop
"As a Seattle institution that has been community driven and community focused for its 101 years, Seattle Audubon makes a difference to the daily lives of wild birds through its conservation, science, and environmental education programs. The Nature Shop - where the profits are for the birds - is the face of Seattle Audubon. Engaging more than 10,000 people a year with the Northwest's best selection of environmental- and bird- related books, locally and sustainably sourced gifts, and the broadest selection of birding optics in the Pacific Northwest."
Now that you've heard why each business believes they deserve their category's award, you are given the daunting task of voting for which of these 5 fantastic businesses should win.
