Our Heart of Seattle Awards are underway and now that the top finalists of each category have been chosen, it's time for them to tell YOU why they should get this prestigious recognition. All of the groups have some pretty solid cases, so we've selected some of the best quotes from each finalist and they will be viewable and accessible on blog posts for the next two months. After reading the quotes, vote for the business that you think should be chosen for the Heart of Seattle award in each category. Up first we have the dining finalists:
"...we produce zero garbage. We have never had a garbage receptacle in the customer area of our store. All of the packaging, utensils, cups, straws, and napkins are compostable. Some of our drinks come in recyclable bottles, so we have a recycling bin as well. Over 95% of our ingredients are local. 100% of our drinks are made in-house or sourced locally (though not coffee and cane sugar). Many of our ingredients come from farmers market vendors, so they are put through a rigorous process by them as well."
"Our goals are to build relationships around food experiences created with ingredients from our local farms and support our community and our team by providing a happy, positive, passionate work environment. We believe in building positive ongoing relationships with our clients and our partners by being authentic, and reliable."
Chaco Canyon Organic Cafe
"We make all business decisions with the goal of having people, the planet and profitability in balance. We never compromise on our mission, and our ultimate goal of having zero environmental impact on the Earth. We wear our hearts on our sleeves and demonstrate this in the way we welcome and take care of customers and employees, donate to local and national causes that share our values, source our ingredients, and prepare every dish. We continually strive to not only show what is possible with a cafe, but to bring our values and mission into the community, to effect real change, and show what a difference one place can make for the world and our community."
"Our flour comes from a handful of wheat farmers in Eastern Washington who mill it especially for our needs. Our dairy is local and growth hormone free. Our eggs are cage-free organic. Even our sweet pink boxes are printed locally with soy-based inks and are compostable. We are committed to giving back to our community and annually donate over 40,000 cupcakes to help raise funds for local non-profits."
Hot Cakes Molten Cakery
"Quality and integrity of ingredients are more important to us than making money. We purchase expensive organic certified ingredients in which we are confident are far better for the longevity of this planet and the health of our bodies... This has been our commitment since day one and we are honored to say that 10 years later (with 2 restaurants, a wholesale and e-commerce program) it still holds true... 10% of our wilderness collection desserts go to our partners (Washington Trails Association, WA Wild and Forterra) who lobby for sustainable and environmental policy and practices. We also partner with them on a regular basis and encourage our staff to volunteer."
Now that you've heard why each business believes they deserve their category's award, you are given the daunting task of voting for which of these 5 fantastic businesses should win.
